Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of NSV?

  • Quicker operation
  • Less discomfort
  • No skin stitches required
  • Shorter recovery
  • Less risk of bleeding or infection

How is the vas blocked?
Various surgeons use different methods to block the vas. At the Billinkoff Vasectomy Centre, an "open-ended" method is used. A small piece of the vas is removed and the upper end is scarred closed with a hot wire (cautery). The lower end is deliberately left open to prevent a back pressure into the testicle. This reduces the risk of complications. A tiny titanium clip (5mm) is applied to tissue between the two ends to prevent them from rejoining. The sperm simply dissolve and are reabsorbed into the body.

Is NSV something new?
Not at all. It was first developed in China in 1974 and has been performed on over 10 million Chinese men. It was brought to North America in 1985 by Dr. Marc Goldstein, a urologist. Together with the Association for Voluntary Surgical Contraception in New York, they have promoted this refinded technique throughout the United States and Canada.
